Can I take HRT
I am 45 years old with low mood, brain fog and still have regular periods - Can I take HRT?

Yes, you can benefit with HRT even if you still have periods. If you have the above symptoms means you are going through the Perimenopause, which is a period before the menopause when levels of oestrogen hormone fluctuate.

Menopause is a retrospective diagnosis when your periods have stopped for 12 months.

HRT will be prescribed after taking a detailed medical history, family history and doing a risk assessment to find out which is the most appropriate HRT to prescribe. You will also need a BP and BMI check.

Which HRT will I be prescribed if I am still having periods?

The options will be

  • Period HRT consisting of taking oestrogen for 4 weeks and progesterone for last 2 weeks every month. At the end of every month, you will have a period.
  • Oestrogen can be combined with a hormone coil (Mirena coil) which contains progesterone hormone to protect your womb from cancer when you take oestrogen. With this type of HRT combination your periods will stop in 3-6 months post treatment.
  1. HRT tablets and patches – contain oestrogen and progesterone in fixed doses.
  2. Tailor made HRT consists of taking both hormones separately, oestrogen as a patch, gel or spray and progesterone as a capsule or in a Mirena coil.
