Mirena CoilMirena Coil
Information about Mirena® coil
The Mirena is a small T shaped plastic device which contains a small amount of a progestogen hormone called Levonorgestrel. It keeps the lining of the womb thin and prevents oestrogen induced cancer of the uterus/womb.

It is an effective long acting reversible method of contraception and is also a first line treatment for heavy periods. It is recommended as the progestogen component of HRT for a 5 year duration.

Irregular bleeding and spotting is a common side effect in the first 6 months which settles and periods usually stop by the end of 12 months. Mirena coil also reduces period pains and pre-menstrual symptoms in some patients.

You can access this treatment at your GP practice or at a local family planning clinic.

I do not provide the service of inserting Mirena coils.
