Testosterone Therapy for menopausal women
Testosterone Therapy for menopausal women - When, Why, What and How?

When?

Low sex drive can affect 1 in 3 menopausal and perimenopausal women.

  1. NICE recommends Testosterone therapy for menopausal women with low sex drive, arousal and orgasmic disorder if HRT alone is not effective.
  2. In women with removal of ovaries – there is a sudden decline in Testosterone and oestrogen.
  3. In women with Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (POI).

Testosterone therapy may also improve cognition, energy levels, headaches, bone health and mood but there is lack of efficacy data on this.

Some women suffer from vaginal dryness and soreness due to lack of oestrogen. This can be treated with local oestrogen pessaries or cream prior to recommending Testosterone.

Why?

Testosterone levels gradually fall from age 20 to 45 years. After menopause there is an imbalance of hormones.

What?

Testosterone gels and Androfeme 1% cream are currently unlicensed for use by women in UK. Male formulations are prescribed in lower doses and hormone levels are maintained in the normal female range for premenopausal women.

A prescription for Testosterone will be offered by Dr Navani after an initial assessment and baseline testosterone levels are checked.

How will I be monitored and are there any side effects?

Regular monitoring of blood testosterone levels is required while on treatment. Risk of developing male hormone side effects such as increased hair growth, acne, change in voice are low if hormone levels are maintained within the normal female range.
